Empowered Communication & Human Opportunity

Executive Summary

ECHO Voices™ focuses on improving communication access for nonverbal and minimally verbal individuals with autism through communication supports, technology, and family education. The initiative recognizes that communication needs vary widely and encourages approaches that help individuals express themselves using appropriate tools and strategies.

Serving families in Virginia, the initiative promotes greater understanding of communication accessibility while supporting parents and caregivers as they learn how to incorporate communication resources into everyday routines.

Our Program Areas

AAC Device Support

AAC Device Support will be a cornerstone program area of ECHO Voices™, designed to ensure that autistic children, youth, and adults who are nonspeaking, minimally speaking, or otherwise experience significant communication barriers have access not only to appropriate Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools, but also to the assessment, training, personalization, ongoing technical assistance, and communication-partner support needed to use them meaningfully.

The program will be built around a fundamental belief:

“Communication is a human need. Speech is only one way to communicate. Every person deserves a reliable way to be heard, understood, make choices, establish boundaries, and participate in decisions affecting their life.“

AI-assisted communication tools

AI-Assisted Communication Tools will be a forward-looking program area of ECHO Voices™, designed to responsibly use artificial intelligence and adaptive technologies to reduce communication barriers for autistic children, youth, and adults—particularly individuals who are nonspeaking, minimally speaking, use AAC, or need additional support organizing and expressing their thoughts.

The program will not position AI as a replacement for an individual’s authentic voice, AAC system, speech-language professional, caregiver, educator, or human relationship. Instead, AI will function as a supportive layer that makes communication easier, faster, more personalized, and more accessible when it genuinely benefits the individual.

The guiding principle will be:

“AI should help a person express their own thoughts—not decide what that person thinks or speaks on their behalf.“

Parent communication training

Parent Communication Training will be a foundational program area of ECHO Voices™, designed to equip parents, caregivers, and other trusted family members with practical, individualized strategies for recognizing, supporting, and expanding the communication of autistic children, youth, and adults—including individuals who are nonspeaking, minimally speaking, or use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

Parents often spend more time with an autistic family member than any individual professional. They may recognize subtle expressions, gestures, sounds, behaviors, routines, or AAC patterns that others do not understand. ECHO Voices™ can build upon that knowledge while helping families develop communication strategies that can be used throughout everyday life.

The guiding principle will be:

“Parents do not need to become therapists. They need the knowledge, confidence, tools, and support to become effective communication partners.“

Communication accessibility labs

Communication Accessibility Labs will be the applied innovation, assessment, training, and demonstration arm of ECHO Voices™, creating accessible environments where autistic children, youth, and adults—particularly nonspeaking, minimally speaking, and AAC-using individuals—can explore, practice, and strengthen communication using the methods that work best for them.

The Labs will bring together AAC, assistive technology, AI-assisted communication, visual supports, communication-partner training, real-world simulations, and professional expertise in one coordinated environment.

“Communication accessibility is not achieved by simply giving someone a device. It is achieved when the person can communicate reliably, be understood, and participate across the environments that make up their life.”

Technology partnerships

Technology Partnerships will serve as the innovation, accessibility, and scaling arm of ECHO Voices™, bringing together technology companies, AAC developers, universities, researchers, healthcare systems, telecommunications providers, accessibility specialists, and other responsible innovators to expand communication access for autistic children, youth, and adults.

The purpose will extend far beyond obtaining donated devices. ECHO Voices™ can use strategic technology partnerships to help develop, test, fund, improve, distribute, and sustain communication technologies that respond to the real needs of autistic people—particularly nonspeaking, minimally speaking, and AAC-using individuals.

The guiding principle will be:

“Technology should not speak over autistic people. It should remove barriers so their own voices can be heard.“

What to Expect

Participation may begin with discussions about an individual’s communication needs, existing supports, and available resources. As communication goals change over time, families may explore additional tools, training opportunities, and technology that align with evolving needs.

Long-Term Goal

The long-term goal is to improve communication access for autistic individuals by encouraging broader awareness of supportive technologies and communication resources. The initiative also seeks to promote greater inclusion by helping families and communities understand diverse methods of communication.
