Executive Summary
A.S.C.E.N.D. Academy™ supports autistic youth and young adults as they prepare for greater independence through practical education and skill development. Serving participants in Virginia, the initiative focuses on areas that commonly support the transition from childhood services to adult responsibilities, including communication, daily living, employment readiness, and continued learning.
Recognizing that every individual develops at a different pace, the initiative encourages gradual skill-building that can be adapted to changing abilities, goals, and support needs throughout adolescence and adulthood.
Our Program Areas
Independent living skills
Independent Living Skills will be a foundational program area of A.S.C.E.N.D. Academy™, preparing autistic youth and adults with the practical abilities, confidence, decision-making skills, and individualized support needed to participate as fully as possible in everyday adult life.
The program will recognize that independence is not all-or-nothing. Some participants may eventually live independently, while others may always require varying levels of family, residential, technological, or professional support. The goal is therefore not to force independence, but to help every participant achieve their highest practical level of autonomy, self-determination, safety, and participation.
The guiding principle will be:
“Independence does not mean doing everything alone. It means having the skills, choices, support, and confidence to participate meaningfully in your own life.“
Communication Development
Communication Development will be a foundational program area of A.S.C.E.N.D. Academy™, designed to help autistic youth and adults strengthen their ability to express needs, make choices, build relationships, participate in education and employment, advocate for themselves, navigate their communities, and exercise greater control over their lives.
The program will be built on a fundamental principle:
“Every person communicates. Our responsibility is not to demand one form of communication, but to identify, strengthen, and respect the communication methods that work for each individual.“
For some participants, communication development may involve expanding spoken language. For others, it may involve Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), gestures, sign language, pictures, visual supports, typing, communication boards, or a combination of methods.
The goal is not simply more speech. The goal is more effective, meaningful, self-directed communication.
Employment readiness
Employment Readiness will be a core program area of A.S.C.E.N.D. Academy™, preparing autistic youth and adults for meaningful participation in the workforce through individualized career discovery, practical workplace training, job coaching, employer partnerships, and long-term employment support.
The program will recognize that employment readiness is not simply teaching someone how to write a résumé or complete an interview. True readiness means helping each participant discover where their strengths can contribute, develop workplace skills, understand expectations, communicate needs, gain real-world experience, and access appropriate accommodations and support.

“Employment is not only about earning income. It can provide purpose, confidence, skills, relationships, independence, and a meaningful place within the community.“
Program Purpose
A.S.C.E.N.D. Academy™ should create a bridge between education and adult economic participation, particularly for autistic young people approaching the transition out of school.
Technology training
Technology Training will be a core program area of A.S.C.E.N.D. Academy™, designed to equip autistic youth and adults with the digital skills, assistive technologies, workplace competencies, and online-safety knowledge needed to participate more independently in modern life.
Technology will be treated not simply as a subject participants learn, but as a tool for communication, independence, employment, education, safety, creativity, and self-advocacy.
The guiding principle will be:
“Technology should reduce barriers, expand opportunity, and give autistic individuals greater control over how they communicate, learn, work, and live.“
Entrepreneurship pathways
Entrepreneurship Pathways will be a specialized economic-empowerment program within A.S.C.E.N.D. Academy™, designed to help autistic youth and adults explore entrepreneurship, self-employment, freelancing, microenterprise, and creative business ownership as meaningful pathways to income, independence, purpose, and community participation.
Traditional employment will be the right path for many participants, but it should not be the only path. Some autistic individuals may have strong interests, specialized abilities, creative talents, or preferred working conditions that can be developed into viable entrepreneurial opportunities.
The guiding principle will be:
“Do not only prepare people to find opportunities. Give them the tools to create opportunities.“
What to Expect
Participation generally begins by identifying individual strengths, learning priorities, and personal goals. As skills develop, activities and learning opportunities can be adjusted to encourage continued progress toward greater independence and community participation.
Long-Term Goal
The initiative seeks to expand opportunities that help autistic individuals prepare for adult life through practical education, skill development, and transition planning. Over time, it aims to support greater independence while recognizing the unique strengths and goals of each participant.
